Community Safety Zones are areas of the roadway where public safety is of special concern. This may include our roadways near schools, daycare centres, retirement facilities, or any other area where heightened concern present.
Moving violations of traffic laws while traveling through a Community Safety Zone automatically results in fines being doubled. This is to reinforce a powerful message that aggressive driving and other infractions will not be tolerated.
Five Safety Zones within the City of Brockville have been designated. These are:
- Thousand Islands Secondary School – Parkedale Avenue between Stewart Boulevard and Windsor Drive
- Thousand Islands Secondary School – Windsor Drive between Parkedale Avenue and Peden Boulevard
- Westminster School and St. Mary School – Central Avenue between Stewart Boulevard and Ferguson Drive
- Commonwealth School, Brockville General Hospital, Brockville Collegiate Institute – Pearl Street from Murray Street to Park Street
- Ange-Gabriel Catholic Academy – Kensington Parkway between Kyle Court and Colonel Curry Drive
These zones have been established in the interest of public safety. In all these areas, there is a high pedestrian traffic of school children attending elementary and secondary schools.
Many principals, teachers and police officers feel that the flashing lights and Community Safety Zone signs are an important tool in reducing traffic speeds. It is also believed that drivers are more cautious and aware when traveling in these areas. Parents have an added feeling of safety knowing that these steps are being taken to promote safety for their children.
