Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) After School Program

Program purpose and objectives:

• Strengthen the relationship between youth, community and police
• Enable young people to acquire an understanding of some aspects of policing and encourage them to consider a career in policing
• Develop and promote community service with program participants
• To establish mentors and role models beyond the program
• Create work experience and assist in the development of job readiness skills
• Build confidence in youth

Eligibility

• Applicants must reside in the City of Brockville or attend a Brockville school
• Must be between 15 and 18 years of age
• Must not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted, and must not have any charges before the courts
• Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Must be able to work evenings (after school) and weekends

The Brockville Police Service are partnering with MedicAlert Foundation Canada to better help officers quickly locate lost or missing vulnerable individuals, such as those living with autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other cognitive brain injuries, so they can be quickly and safely returned to their loved ones.

MedicAlert Connect Protect gives police officers 24-hour access to a registered subscriber’s photo, identifying information, past wandering history and other medical information through the MedicAlert identification and associated database.

This information will help officers search more efficiently, increasing the chances that those who go missing are reunited with their loved ones sooner. Officers called to an emergency involving a MedicAlert subscriber will have access to vital information which could save a life.

“We are pleased to announce our partnership with MedicAlert.  Quick access to important information will help us to better protect our most vulnerable citizens,” says Staff Sgt. Andrew Harvie.

MedicAlert will be holding a registration session in Brockville following the launch of MedicAlert Connect Protect. Members of the public are encouraged to learn more and sign up themselves or a loved one. Thanks to Brockville Police Service and MedicAlert Foundation Canada, the first 20 new MedicAlert subscribers will get their first-year service plan and a MedicAlert ID at no cost.

Distracted Driving:

This long weekend officers will be joining their provincial counterparts and will pay special attention to distracted drivers during their long weekend safety blitz targeting distracted driving.

Ontario data on collisions from 2013 show:

• one person is injured in a distracted-driving collision every half hour
• a driver using a phone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focusing on the road

The Brockville Police Service will be participating in next weeks distracted driving campaign along with the Ontario Provincial Police. The campaign will run from Monday March 12, to Sunday March 18 and will focus on education and enforcement of drivers using hand-held devices.

This traffic violation carries a $490 fine and three demerit points. Please drive safe!

The Brockville Police Services Board is happy to announce the appointment of Deputy Chief Mark Noonan.

Deputy Chief Mark Noonan

Mark will be replacing Deputy Chief Lee MacArthur who retired today after 33 years of service with the Brockville Police.  Mark started with the Brockville Police Service in July 1992 and has held numerous positions within the organization.  Mark is currently supervising the Criminal Investigation Branch and is a member of the Senior Management team.  The Brockville Police Services Board conducted an internal search for a replacement for Deputy Chief MacArthur when he announced his plans to retire.  “We are fortunate to have a number of qualified individuals within our current organization and we are pleased to be able to promote from within.” – King Yee Jr – Chair of Brockville Police Services Board.

Moving forward, we look forward to working with Deputy Chief Noonan and we wish Deputy Chief MacArthur all the best in his retirement.

It is a day of mixed emotions for members of the Brockville Police Service family as we say “good-bye” to 3 of our valued members and wish them and their loved one’s the very best for a happy and healthy retirement.

Deputy Chief Lee MacArthur

Deputy Chief Lee MacArthur was hired under Chief Gerry Curtis and throughout his career worked under eight Chiefs and was the Deputy Chief to four of them.

While working his way up through the ranks, Lee became a Detective Constable in 1990, and in 1996 became the first full-time Drugs and Intelligence officer for the service. In 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant in charge of the detective office. He was again promoted in 2002 to the rank of Inspector and became Deputy Chief in 2007.

Deputy Chief MacArthur is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia and of the Executive Management Course at the Rotman School of Business.

A native of New Brunswick, Lee and his wife Connie own a summer home on the Bay of Fundy where they can now spend their summers enjoying the beautiful view.

Constable Robert Ferguson

Constable Robert Ferguson began his career with the Brockville Police Service in May of 1983 as a general patrol officer, a position he thoroughly enjoyed throughout most of his career. “Fergie” as he was referred to by his colleagues is very much a people person, a gift which made him such a successful patrol officer during his career.

Constable Ferguson was one of the Brockville Police Services training officers during his career and helped train over 10 recruits currently working for the service. For several summers, he and retired Constable Ryan Hayes enjoyed being part of the summer bike patrol in downtown Brockville. Constable Ferguson was also trained as a Drug Recognition Officer (DRE) for detection of drug impaired drivers and early in his career was a member of the Service’s Containment Team.

An avid sportsman, Rob was an accomplished baseball player and now enjoys refereeing basketball and is Vice-President of the Referees Association of Canada.

Support Services Coordinator Deena Shaw

Deena has been a member of the Brockville Police since 1985 when she was first hired as a 911 dispatcher in our communications centre of the Brockville Police Service.

In 2009, Deena was promoted to the position of Support Services coordinator, a positions which includes supervision of the Communications Centre, being in charge of the Evidence and Property Room, Firearms, and the licensing of taxi and ensuring compliance of the taxi by-law.

During her career with the Brockville Police Service, Deena has worked with 8 Chiefs of Police, volunteered with the Brockville Police Association in a number of positions.

In her personal life, Deena was a big supporter of Canadian Aid for Chernobyl and over the years sponsored 4 children for summers in Canada. One of those children eventually achieved her landed immigrant status in Canada and lived with Deena and her family eventually graduating from BCI and St. Lawrence College in nursing and is currently working as an RPN in Alberta.

Deena has two other children, Jason who is a member of the Canadian Forces, and Mathew who works locally at Hendrix and is a volunteer firefighter.

Random Act of Christmas!!!

Constable April Muldoon and Sergeant Darryl Boyd of The Brockville Police Association had the wonderful experience of meeting Adam MacDonald in our first ever Random Act of Christmas! Police Association members met him at a local gas station in downtown Brockville. We made his holiday season a little merrier by filling up his gas tank. Street Closures for the Santa Claus parade

Brockville Police would like to advise residents of street closures in effect for the annual Santa Claus parade on Saturday.

• North Augusta Road between Reynolds Drive and Keefer Streets will be closed between 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. For North-South traffic and access to the Centennial Youth Arena and Broadway please use Oxford Avenue.
• Pearl Street between North Augusta Road and Park Streets will be closed from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
• Park Street between Pearl Street and King Street will be closed from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
• King Street between Park Street and Edward Street will be closed from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Motorists travelling east or west in the City during these time please use Reynolds Drive.

Parking restrictions will also be in effect along the parade route along Pearl Street between North Augusta and Park Street, Park Street from Pearl to King Street and King Street from Park Street to Edward Street. Police are asking that all vehicles along the parade route be removed by 3 p.m. Saturday for the parade.

The Brockville Police Service and volunteers with their After School Program will be setting up voting stations at Stingers this afternoon from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. as part of a community effort to obtain a grant through the Aviva Community Fund. There will 8-10 voting stations set up at Stingers using iPads, laptops and desktop computers for voting and volunteers to assist members of the community who wish to vote to support the project. The Aviva Community Fund has for the past 8 years invested in charitable community initiatives across Canada, protecting people and things you love in your community, and supporting community causes you care about the most.

The Brockville Police After School Program was developed to fill a gap in after school programming for youth in the Brockville area. The program allows youths in grades 7-12 to participate in a variety of activities and be connected to resources in a safe, inclusive adult supported environment.

The program which focuses on fitness and health runs every Tuesday during the school year from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and participants take part in activities such as laser tag, basketball, hockey, baseball, volleyball, badminton and obstacle courses. Youths can also play board games, magic, arts and crafts and fun team building games.

In addition the program, youths have access to a healthy snack or meal to stay energized throughout their participation. Students also have access to peer support in the homework area for those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity as well.

The program also provides opportunity for children to access many community agencies which may become important at some time in their lives such as the Employment and Education Centre, the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Health Unit and Children’s Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville.

The program is free of charge for all participants.
