Traffic Initiative

Over the weekend, Brockville Police had a traffic initiative targeting red lights and speeders at high traffic intersections in response to concerns raised in the community.

On Friday morning from 11am to 12 pm officers set up at the intersection of North Augusta Rd and Reynolds Drive and were happy to report no infractions during this time period.

Saturday officers switched their focus to the Stewart Boulevard corridor and monitored the intersections at Central Avenue, and Front Avenue. Highway Traffic Act charges were issued for using a cellphone, and failing to surrender a driver’s licence. Officers also gave 2 warnings for amber light infractions.

On Sunday, patrol officers focused further north on Stewart Blvd at Parkedale Ave when 6 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act, 2 for speeding, 1 for an unsafe lane change, 1 for an unlicensed driver, 1 for not wearing a seatbelt and 1 for not having an insurance card.

Distracted driving continues to be a problem. Officers report seeing several other motorists on their cell phones, however they were unable to get them pulled because they were dealing with other vehicles at the time.

Arrest Warrant

A 41 year old Lyndhurst area man was arrested by Brockville Police Sunday afternoon for outstanding warrants from Gananoque.

Brockville Police recognized the male walking on Laurier Blvd Sunday afternoon and learned he had outstanding warrants from the Gananoque Police. He was stopped and arrested on the strength of the warrant and returned to Gananoque to face the outstanding charges.

Mischief

A 33 year old Brockville area man and his 32 year old brother are facing charges in relation to an alcohol fueled incident at 2-4-1 Pizza last evening.

At approximately 9:30 pm Brockville Police were called to 2-4-1 Pizza after the front door of the business was smashed as the pair entered the restaurant. Officers attended and located the pair well under the influence of alcohol. It was learned that the 33 year old was responsible for smashing the door and is facing charges of mischief as a result. His 32 year old brother is making charges of Public Intoxication under the Liquor Licence Act.

Impaired Operation

On the 4th of March, 2017 at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Brockville Police Service located and arrested a local, 18 year old male, operating a landscaping tractor on the property of St. Lawrence College, while impaired by alcohol. Investigation revealed that the male had caused significant damage to the tractor which was owned by the College. Breath samples taken from the male indicated that he was operating the tractor at approximately twice that of the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. He was charged and released from custody with a future court date.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

On the 5th of March, 2017 at approximately 2:50 a.m., officers from the Brockville Police Service conducted a traffic stop for a Highway Traffic Act offence on James Street in Brockville. The 22 year old driver from the Kemptville area, wanted by the Brockville Police Service in relation to a separate theft incident. He was placed under arrest. As officers were investigating the driver, it was learned he and his 27 year old passenger from the Prescott area were also in possession of approximately a 1/2 pound of marijuana. At that time, both males were arrested for the possession of a controlled substance also. They were taken into custody and later released with future court dates.

Warrants Executed

On the 3rd of March, 2017 at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Brockville Police Service located and arrested a local, 40 year old female in regards to outstanding warrants for failing to attend court. She was released from police custody with a future court date.

Arrest Made With Drugs located in Traffic Stop

On the 3rd of March, 2017 at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers from the Brockville Police Service were conducting a RIDE program within the City of Brockville. At that time, one of the random stops was of a vehicle with 2, 21 year old males from Smiths Falls. There was a strong odour of alcohol and open alcohol containers were observed within the vehicle. The investigation revealed that the 2 males were in possession of non prescribed pharmaceuticals. The total street value of the quantity of this drug would be approximatley $2000.00. The males were arrested and charged by police for possession for the purposes of trafficking. They were released from custody with future court dates.

Child Pornography Charges

A 29 year old Brockville man is facing charges of Possession of Child Pornography after a Search Warrant was executed at his residence Thursday afternoon.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Child Exploitation Unit and Technical Crime Units assisted Detectives from the Brockville Police Services Criminal Investigations office in executing the warrant at the male’s residence. During the warrant, a computer and computer equipment were seized.

Police were alerted to the suspicious activities of the Brockville man by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre after images were uploaded using a chat application.

The accused is facing two counts of Possession of Child Pornography and will appear in court Friday for a Bail Hearing.

Disturb the Peace

Brockville Police received several calls early this morning of a man yelling and causing a disturbance on King Street West.

At approximately 12:45 am King Street West residents were awakened by the young man yelling, and throwing a garbage can around. When officers attended they located a 29 year old Brockville man who is known to the police under the influence of alcohol. The young man had told officers he had been assaulted earlier and had minor injuries to his facial area. However, he was uncooperative with the police at the time trying to investigate his claims.

During the investigation officers on the scene confirmed the man was on probation with a condition that he abstains from the consumption of alcohol. As a result, he was conveyed to the Brockville General Hospital for treatment of his injuries and left in their care after being given a future court date for breaching his probation.

Door to Door Furnace Inspection

A north end Brockville resident contacted Brockville Police at 6:30 pm last evening to report a suspicious Furnace Inspector in their neighbourhood who had come to their residence. The caller advised police the male suspect was quite aggressive in seeking to enter the residence to look at their furnace. The only description the caller was able to provide to police was a young white male 20-25 years of age carrying a notepad last seen walking north bound on Windsor Drive.

Brockville Police are urging caution when dealing with door-to-door sales persons and inspectors. Residents should not let anyone into their home they do not know or trust. Legitimate sales persons will have identification of themselves and the company they represent, and call and make appointments. Residents can then search the company online for legitimacy and any complaints of their sales practices and make a decision if you wish the sales person to return to your residence. The Canadian Anti-Fraud and Better Business Bureau website are an excellent resource.

Residents are also reminded if you have signed a contract with a door to door sales person and are having second thoughts there is some protection under the Consumer Protection Act of Ontario. You may cancel the contract within 10 days after receiving a written copy of the agreement without any reason.

Traffic Enforcement Initiatives

On Wednesday morning between 10-11am officers with the Brockville Police were in the area of Parkedale Avenue at Windsor Drive enforcing the area School Zones.

Officers handed out 2 Provincial Offence Notices for speeding and issued 10 warnings under the Highway Traffic Act ranging from speeding, improper insurance and vehicle registration documents.

Also, early Thursday morning at approximately 12:40 am officers patrol officers observed 4 vehicles eastbound on Parkedale Avenue at a high rate of speed. The vehicles were stopped and pulled over at North Augusta Road. All parties were warning with street racing and given Provincial Offence Notices for speeding, and driving with an improperly validated permit.

Shoplifting

A 25 year old Brockville woman is facing charges of theft under $5000 in relation to a shoplifting incident at the Real Canadian Superstore.

At approximately 6:50 pm officers were asked to attend the Superstore after store security there witnessed the young female select a number of items and place them in a bag she had carried in with her from another department store. She was confronted outside the store and agreed to return with security and wait until police arrived.

She was subsequently arrested and turned over to police who recovered the stolen items and released her with a future court date.

Breach of Probation

A 22 year old Brockville resident is facing Breach of Probation charges after being found by officers under the influence of alcohol last evening.

At approximately 10:30 pm officers on patrol observed a male trying to break the glass at the Scotiabank on King Street. Officers went over to try and stop the young man and speak with him to find out what was going on and found him to be under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation revealed he was on probation with a condition that he abstains from the consumption of alcohol.

As a result he was arrested and held until sober and released from custody with a future court date for his new Breach of Probation charge. There was no damage to the window at the Scotiabank.

Arrest Warrant: Fail to Attend Court

While on patrol at 11pm last evening on Central Avenue, Brockville Police officers spotted a 51 year old Brockville woman wanted for failing to attend court on Friday February 24th. The woman was arrested without incident and conveyed to Brockville Police headquarters where she is being held in custody until Wednesday afternoon when she will appear at Brockville Court for a Bail Hearing.

Kijiji Fraud

Detectives with the Brockville Police Services Criminal investigation Branch are reminding residents to be extremely cautious of online purchases where the victim is being asked for a deposit to hold an item for viewing or sale.

A 31 year old man attended to the Brockville Police Service to report that he had agreed to make a deposit through e-transfer to view a 2010 Lexus he was interested in purchasing which he had found on Kijiji. The fraudster had provided a Hotmail.com email address to transfer the money to a Brockville address to view the vehicle and his wife’s name and a phone number to contact. When he arrived at the residence to see the vehicle, there was no car for sale and no one at the residence with the name provided, and residents had no idea about a vehicle for sale and the male victim had lost his deposit.

Brockville Police are reminding residents to never electronically transfer money to persons, businesses or organizations you do not know or trust. Prior to completing online purchases, search the individual, business, organization online for other similar scams. Be extremely cautious if asked to transfer money to Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail accounts you do not know or recognize or sending money to persons outside of Canada.

And finally, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Suspicious Vehicle

Brockville Police are looking to speak with the occupants of a newer model black van in relation to an incident on Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 325pm a 10 year old girl was walking home from school in the area of Pearl and Park Streets when a black van approached her. The male passenger in the front of the van proceeded to yell something out the window about the young girl’s family to her. The frightened young lady then ran home and told her parents about what happened, and they contacted police who attended and spoke with her.

The van is described as a newer model black van with tinted windows and had a red and blue bandana hanging from the rear view mirror. The driver was described as female with blonde hair and there was a male passenger in both the front passenger seat and rear passenger seat. The girl did not recognize any of the occupants as family friends.

Mischief at Prince of Wales School

Custodians at Prince of Wales School arrived yesterday to find a broken window to the west side entrance doors of the school.

Sometime over the weekend unknown person(s) attended to the school and threw a piece of asphalt at the glass in the doors of the school, smashing the glass. No entrance was gained during the incident.

Fail to stop/Drugs

While on general patrol Brockville Police, observed a motor vehicle south bound on Stewart travelling in excess of 100 km/hr. Police subsequently attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver initially refused to pull over. The driver threw a package out the window as he travelled south up the overpass adjacent the Ford dealership. The vehicle stopped on Stewart at Brock Street. Police recovered a quantity of cocaine that had been thrown out of the vehicle. A 41 year old has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and possession of cocaine. His vehicle was also impounded for 7 days under the Highway Traffic Act.

Warrants/Drug Offences

On Friday, February 24, officers working at the court house recognized a 49 year old male standing outside. Knowing that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant the court staff approached to arrest him. When he observed the officers he attempted to discard a quantity of drugs. He was arrested and the drugs were quickly recovered. He was remanded into custody.

Warrants/Drug Offences

Also arrested yesterday was a 39 year old male that was located at a downtown address. He had outstanding warrants and was located with a small quantity of drugs on his person. He has also been remanded into custody.

Frauds

Brockville Police are investigating two separate fraudulent incidents where the suspect befriends the victim through social media. The victims are then coerced into giving the suspects funds. One of the frauds has exceeded $20,000. Police are actively investigating these occurrences.

Accidents

On Friday Brockville Police investigated a motor vehicle accident on Reynolds Drive at Glenn Wood Pl. One driver was transported to Brockville General Hospital with minor injuries. The second driver involved was charged with careless driving.

On Saturday morning a single motor vehicle struck a Hydro pole on Chaffey St. at Morgan Lane. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Brockville General Hospital.

Warrants

As a result of investigating one of these accidents, officers located and arrested a 3rd male wanted on outstanding warrants. He was released with a future court date.

Break and Enter Charges

A 24 year old Brockville man is facing break and enter and mischief charges after an argument with his 23 year old girlfriend early yesterday morning. Early Thursday morning the young man had been drinking, and the couple began arguing at the woman’s house before he left the residence for the remainder of the night. At approximately 6 a.m. Thursday morning Brockville Police received a call from the residence indicating the now intoxicated male had broken into the residence and was now sleeping in the basement. Further investigation revealed he had mistakenly entered three other residences in the area looking for his girlfriend’s house before finding the correct residence.

Responding officers arrested the male for break and enter and mischief in relation to the incidents and held him until he was sober. He was released with several conditions and given a future court date.

Impaired Driving a Motor Assisted Bicycle

Last evening at approximately 610 p.m. officers stopped a Motor Assisted Bicycle on Buell Street for a Highway Traffic Act infraction and found the operator to be under the influence of alcohol.

The 41 year old Brockville man was driving his gas-powered bike on Buell Street and having troubles braking when officers stopped him. While speaking with the man, it was obvious to them he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Officers then arrested the man for impaired driving, as a Motorized Bicycle is a motor vehicle, and demanded he provide breath samples which the man refused. Further investigation revealed the operator was a disqualified driver for life for previous convictions of impaired driving.

As a result the Brockville man is now facing charges of impaired driving, refusal to provide breath samples and driving while disqualified. He was also released from custody and given a future court date.
