Police would like to remind the community again about a couple active scams taking place. These scams are not new but people are still being taken advantage of.

The first one involves a phone call being received advising of a computer problem. Residents are then advised to attend their computer and open it allowing access. They are charged a fee for fixing a problem that never existed or worse yet, their identity is jeopardized. Police remind people to ignore these requests and never allow remote access to their computers or credit cards. If you suspect there is a problem with your computer seek local computer expertise.

The second scam involves people trying to sell items on Kijiji etc. They receive a cheque from someone posing as a buyer which amounts to more than the price of the item for sale. They are then asked to attend a money transfer outlet and send the proposed buyer a wire transfer for the difference. These people are not legitimate and the cheques are not cashable.

These scams have been going on for a while now. We ask the public to be careful and avoid any transactions that raise a flag.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!!

In the early morning hours of August 12, Police responded to an unknown disturbance at an address in the center of town.

The police dealt with a male party at the residence who was under release conditions for previous charges. He was found to be consuming alcohol and not keeping the peace which was a breach of his release documents.

The 59 year old, local male was arrested and charged with Breach of his Undertaking X 2 counts. He will appear in bail court later today.

Police responded an hour later to same residence as above for further issues involving another male in the residence.

A 54 year old, local male was removed from the residence to prevent a further breach of the peace. He was released later the same day unconditionally.

On August 11, Police responded to a complaint of a suspicious couple on King St. W.

The pair were trying to buy clothing at a downtown business however the credit cards they were in possession of were being declined for different reasons. The transaction was not completed.

The Brockville Police Service is currently trying to locate, Christopher Merkley, 36 years of age.

At approximately 10:00 am. on this date, Merkley confronted a male and a female riding their bikes on Water St. An altercation ensued which involved the female being assaulted and the male threatened with a weapon.

A warrant has been obtained and Merkely is wanted for Threats, Assault, Weapons Dangerous and Assault with a Weapon.

Injuries were minor in nature and no medical attention was sought.

On August 8th, Police observed a local male driving through Hardy park on an E-Bike. The male was found to be a prohibited driver under the criminal code.

The 44 yr. old was charged with Driving while Prohibited and given a future court date.

On August 8th, Police responded to a north end apartment complex in regards to a male party passed out near the rear door.

A local 53 yr. old male was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication. He was released when sober and issued a fine.

On August 9th, Police responded to a suspicious vehicle and driver in the parking lot of a north end apartment complex.

While dealing with the driver, it was noted she had consumed alcohol. She would not however supply a sample of her breath when requested to do so. The local, 74 yr. old female was charged with Failing to Provide a Sample into a Roadside Screening Device.

She was released at the scene with a future court date.

In the early morning hours of August 10th, Police responded to an apartment complex on Stewart Blvd. in regards to a male party trying to enter different apartments.

Police found a 26 year. old male within the building who was very intoxicated and thought he was at a different building.

He was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication, released when sober and issued a fine.

On August 10th, Police discovered an intoxicated male in the back parking lot of the Police Station.

A 33 year old local male was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication. He was released when sober with a fine.

Many of our local youth tried their luck landing some fish with the aid of many officers and civilians from the Brockville Police Service.
