Increase in ATM Distraction Thefts

The Brockville Police Service has seen in rise in incidents where suspect(s) approach individuals at ATMS under the pretense of offering assistance, only to distract them and steal their debit cards.  In these cases, suspects create an opportunity to swap the victim’s card with a ‘look-alike’.  For example, the suspect(s) will cause the victim to drop their card on the ground, then pick it up for the victim while keeping the original.

Stay Alert when using ATMS.  Always exercise caution if being approached by a stranger.
