Traffic Enforcement

Tuesday morning between 10:30-11:30am officers conducted a traffic enforcement blitz in the community safety zone at Parkedale Avenue and Windsor Drive around Thousand Island Secondary School (TISS). In the approximately 1 hour period officers charged 8 motorists with speeding offences.

Police remind motorists to slow down and use caution while driving through school zones.

Threats

Two 16 year old Brockville youths are facing threatening charges in relation to an on-going incident with their 19 year old victim. The youths sending the victim threatening messages and following around the north end of the city. They were arrested and released on conditions to have no further contact with the victim and given a March youth court date.

Domestic Disturbance

A 48 year old Brockville man is facing charges in relation to a domestic disturbance at a Victoria Avenue residence early this morning. At approximately 1:00 am Brockville Police attended to a disturbance at a south end residence and learned there had been an altercation between the male and his 37 year old girlfriend. As a result the male who was out on bail at the time of the incident was taken into custody and is now facing charges of domestic assault and breaching his bail conditions. He was held in custody and awaiting a bail hearing.

Domestic

A 26 year old Brockville man has been arrested for harassing his former spouse. Brockville Police received a call Monday morning from a 26 year old woman who advised police that she had received death threats from her former partner via text message and feared for her safety. Police attended and viewed numerous messages from the accused including a number of a threatening nature. The male was later located and arrested for Criminal Harassment and Uttering Threats and released with conditions which include not having any further communications with the victim or any of the witnesses and given a March court date.

Warrant Executed

A 39 year old Brockville woman attended to Brockville court yesterday morning and surrendered herself to Brockville Police for her outstanding warrants. The woman had previously been charged in December for Impaired Driving and Failed to Appear for her court date earlier this month.

Public Mischief

A 19 year old Brockville woman was arrested and charged by Brockville Police yesterday after she admitted to not being truthful to officers in a December incident at a King St West building. On the 9th of December at approximately 7:30 pm officers and Brockville Fire Fighters responded to an alarm at the building. On arrival there was a disturbance going on resulting in an arrest. The young woman admitted to not being truthful with police in regards to this incident and to pulling the alarm and was subsequently charged with Public Mischief. At the time of the incident she was on probation and faces a further charge of Breach of Probation.

Snow Removal

Police issued 32 snow removal tickets south of the CN rail line overnight while City of Brockville crews continued their snow removal work. Residents are reminded that overnight parking is prohibited on City streets during snow removal times.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Injuries

Last evening at approximately 10:15 pm Brockville Police responded with Leeds and Grenville EMS to a motor vehicle collision on Wall Street just north of the intersection at Pearl. A white Ford Mustang being operated by a 20yr old local woman was northbound on Wall Street when she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a tree. Both she and her 20yr old male passenger were conveyed to Brockville General Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The driver of the white Mustang was charged with a number of Highway Traffic Act offences including Careless Driving and Driving while under Suspension.

Despite the poor weather and driving conditions this was the only Motor Vehicle Collision Brockville Police officers had to respond to during yesterday’s storm.

Weekend Summary

During the weekend from Friday February 10th – until 7:00am Monday morning Brockville Police responded to 70 calls for service including 5 motor vehicle collisions, 2 domestic disturbances, and three Bail Violations. Officers laid 9 Criminal Code Charges during those occurrences and several charges under the Highway Traffic Act resulting from the collisions.

Warrants

On the 11th of February, 2017 at approximatley 4 p.m. police were on general patrol in the area of the thousand Islands Mall when they observed a 25 year old man they knew to be at large with outstanding warrants for his arrest. The man immediately ran from police however he was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. The man had a total of 4 outstanding warrants for his arrest for various criminal offences. He was consequently held in custody for bail.

Assault

On the 11th of February, 2017 a 39 year old Brockville man was arrested for pushing his wife. After interviewing all involved, the man was charged with assault and released with a future court date. No injuries were reported in relation to this incident.

Breach of Probation

On the 10th of February, 2017 a 49 year old man attended a residence located in the south end of the city. The man was intoxicated, and was on probation with conditions not to communicate with the resident at that address. The man was arrested and released with a future court date for breaching probation.

Shoplifting

On the 10th of February, 2017 a 37 year old man was apprehended by the loss prevention officer at a north end retail store. Police attended and continued the arrest of the Cornwall resident for the offence of theft under 5000 dollars. The man was transported to the Brockville Police Service where he was released with a future court date.

Stolen Vehicle from Hamilton Street

On the 10th of February, 2017 at approximately 7:30 pm a Hamilton Street resident returned to their home and discovered their pick up truck had been taken.

The stolen truck is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup with Ontario License #7560NE. The vehicle is blue in colour with a white passenger door and white tailgate. Anyone who may have been in the area of Hamilton Street and witnessed a vehicle fitting this description or has additional information is asked to conact the Brockville Police at 613-342-0127 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Theft

A 31 year old Brockville woman was arrested in connection with a theft from a residence on King Street East yesterday afternoon. The woman attended to the residence and removed some items and was confronted by the resident who was home at the time. The resident attempted to apprehend the suspect; however the woman was able to escape. The victim then contacted the police who located and arrested the female suspect a short distance away on King Street. She was released on a Promise to Appear and given a March court date.

Warrants

The Smiths Falls Police Service located a 48 year old local man wanted on an outstanding warrant from Brockville for failing to attend court. While being searched upon arrest, a quantity of cocaine was discovered on the male. He was returned to Brockville and remanded into custody pending a bail hearing and faces further charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Mischief

Two Brockville youths are being sought in connection with a mischief on MacOdrum Drive area early this morning. At approximately 1:30 this morning Brockville Police responded to a disturbance at the north end street and a vehicle damaged by bottles and a hammer. The youths responsible have been identified and are currently being sought by police.

Family Dispute

A 32 year old male was arrested to prevent a further breach of the peace yesterday afternoon when the man had drank too much and began disrupting his mothers household. Police were called to assist. The subject could not be reasoned with and was taken into custody. He made statements eluding to self harm and was also counselled by mental health professionals who assisted him for future treatment. He was released when sober with no charges.

Domestic Assault

Police responded to a 911 call by a small child crying and needing police. Officers flooded the address that was provided but the male partner that was forcing his way into the house had fled. The female victim was trying to keep him from coming into the house unsucessfully. The male turned himself into police a very short time later. No one was injured in the incident. The 27 year old male was held for bail hearing facing assault and mischief charges.

Impersonation Charges

An officer who had dealt with a 31 year old female in a past traffic stop which resulted in a suspension of her drivers license observed her last night driving while under suspension. Upon pulling her over the woman persisted that she was her sister and even had the sisters drivers license. This is a criminal offence called Personation. She was arrested for this crime and charged with it. She also received a charge for driving under suspension. She was released with future court dates.

The Brockville Police Service has observed discussions around the Province regarding police clearance of incidents and assistance to victims. We want our community to understand that the Brockville Police Service takes assisting victims very seriously. The police service is proud to work with partners such as the Assault Response and Care Centre of Leeds and Grenville, Interval House, Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville, Victim Witness Assistance Program and Family and Children Services, to name a few.

The Brockville Police Service continually reviews its policies and procedures relating to the investigation and clearing of all incidents. Incidents that are reported are investigated thoroughly and often with the assistance of our community partners. Reports that are submitted by officers are reviewed by a supervisor before the investigation is concluded.

We recognize the need for training and recently had officers attend training with Dr. Lori Haskell, a leading professional in trauma and sexual violence. Effective communication between investigators, community partners and victims of violence and sexual violence is paramount.

Fraud

A 34 year old Brockville woman was arrested late yesterday afternoon after she had cashed a stolen cheque at a downtown ATM machine. Yesterday afternoon the victim, another Brockville area woman attended to the Brockville Police Headquarters after she discovered usual activity on her bank account while making a purchase. Making some inquiries, the victim discovered a cheque written on her personal account which she had not written and provided this information to the police. With this information the suspect was identified and located arrested for the offence of fraud. She was released on a Promise to Appear with a March 17th court date.

Stolen Vehicle Recovered

The white 2004 White Acura which was reported stolen on Monday evening has been recovered by Leeds County OPP near Elgin. Officers report the vehicle had left the main road and had suffered damage prior to being abandoned. At present the vehicle is being towed to a local facility where the Brockville Police Identification Unit will conduct a Forensic examination.

Mischief

An Athens woman had her front tire slashed while shopping at Wal-Mart yesterday afternoon. The woman parked her vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot at approximately 4pm and went inside to do some shopping. When she returned she discovered her front passenger side tire had been slashed and she contacted police. Weather

Despite yesterday’s storm and poor road conditions in many places Brockville Police responded to only 2 minor motor vehicle collisions with no injuries.

Stolen Vehicle from Park Street

At approximately 8pm last evening a Park Street resident left his vehicle running in front of his house while he ran inside for a moment to pick something up and go on his way. However when he returned his vehicle had been stolen and he contacted police.

The stolen car is a 2004 Acura 4dr white with Ontario License #BTAP 533. At the time of the theft, the vehicle was low on gas. Anyone who may have been in the area of Park Street at Charles Street and witnesses a vehicle fitting this description or has additional information is asked to conavt the Brockville Police at 613-342-0127 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Latest Fraud Scam in Brockville Area

Brockville Police are receiving numerous calls from area residents reporting a new scam to hit the area. Callers report being contacted, usually early in the morning, by someone pretending to be an employee from the bank who has noticed unusual transactions (between $200-$400) on their accounts. The caller states that in order for these transactions to be reversed they will either have to provide personal information to the caller or go to their computer and they will provide a link to an internet address to provide this information.

Brockville Police are reminding area residents to never provide personal information over the phone to anyone you do not know. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local bank branch and speak with a customer service representative or contact the bank security department by phone yourself.

International Safer Internet Day

Tuesday, February 7th marks International Safer Internet Day (#SID2017), a day where people around the world join forces to teach children and youth about using online technology in a safe and responsible way. This year, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (Canadian Centre) is introducing a new, free resource to help parents talk online safety with their kids.

Safety Rocks is an activity book aimed at children in Grades 3 and 4. Jack, Olivia and their dragons help parents teach important personal safety strategies that apply both offline and online – such as when to keep or speak a secret, who is a safe adult, and what is okay and not okay.
