Domestic Disputes Sunday

Brockville Police responded to a pair of domestic disturbances last evening in an otherwise quiet day Sunday with 20 calls for service and minor in nature.

Sunday evening, just before 8 p.m. officers were called to the area of Buell Street at Pearl Street when a caller reported a young man and women in a heated argument. Caller advised the couple were walking westbound on Pearl Street. Responding officers eventually located the couple on Perth Street and spoke with the 19 year old man and his 21 year old girlfriend. Both reported it was a verbal argument only and agreed to go their separate ways for the night.

Shortly after 1 a.m. this morning Brockville Police were called to a King Street East apartment building, on a report of a domestic disturbance. When officers attended they spoke to the couple in the apartment who told police they were upset over some upsetting news they had received, which turned into an argument between the couple. Neither person was complaining of being assaulted or afraid nor the couple retired for the night.

Halloween Safety Tips

As Halloween is upon us tomorrow evening the Brockville Police Service would like to remind residents of a few easy safety tips to keep in mind so everyone can enjoy a fun and safe holiday.

1. Ensure costumes are fun and creative but also safe. Make sure children can be seen by drivers and decorate costumes and bags with reflective stickers or tape. Carry flashlights or glow sticks so you can see better and can be seen by drivers.
2. Cross at street corners and if there is a traffic control in place, obey the traffic signal. Make sure all directions are clear before crossing the street.
3. Put down your electronic device! Keep your head up and walk across the street.
4. Use sidewalks or pathways. If there are no sidewalks remember to walk facing traffic.

For Drivers:

1. Slowdown in residential neighbourhoods especially between the peak trick or treating times of 5:30-9:30 p.m.
2. Take extra time at intersections to look for children on medians and curbs. Children are very excited on Halloween and their behaviour may be unpredictable.
3. Minimize any distractions in your vehicle. Avoid talking on your phone or eating so you can fully concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Impaired Charge

A 65 year old female was arrested and charged for Drive over .80mgs of alcohol and impaired operation of a motor vehicle after she was stoped by Brockville Police. She was released with a future court date, her drivers licence was suspended for 90 as well her vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Warrant

At 21 year old male was arrested by Ottawa Police Service on outstanding Brockville Police Service warrant for Fraud, Breach of Probation and Fail to re-attend court. He was transported back to the Brockville Police Service to await a bail hearing.

Warrants

On the 21st of October, 2017 the Ontario Provincial Police had the opportunity to arrest  a 54 year old Brockville man on an outstanding warrant for his arrest held by the Brockville Police.  The warrant was in relation to a Brockville incident and he was subsequently handed over to the Brockville Police.  The man was later released on a Promise to Appear with a future court date.

On the 22nd of October, 2017 at approximately 03:00 a.m. police located and arrested a 26 year old Brockville man on an outstanding warrant of arrest for the offences of breaching probation conditions and driving while disqualified.  The man was later released on a Promise to Appear with a future court date.

False Fire Alarms

On the 22nd of October, 2017 at approximately 05:32 a.m. the Brockville Police responded to fire alarms at multiple buildings in the north end of the City.  Alarms were activated at 1400, 1410, 1360 Kensington Blvd, 12 Cartier Court and both 780 and 790 Laurier Blvd.  All alarms were false and are being investigated as acts of mischief / false fire alarms.

Aviva Community Fund voting

The Brockville Police would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for our After School Program bid for the Aviva Community Fund grant. In the voting, the Brockville Police Services after School Program finished 2nd in all of Canada and 1st in our category of Community Development.

The 15 ideas that receive the most votes in each of the two funding levels in the Community Development, Community Health and Community Resilience categories plus the 5 ideas that receive the most votes in the Community Legacy category and the idea with the highest Aviva broker partner votes (Top Ranked Broker-Supported idea) will become Finalists.

The 35 Finalists are then evaluated by an independent panel of judges who choose the Grand Prize Winners. Grand Prize Winners receive up to $100,000 (if entered into the large level of funding), up to $50,000 (if entered into the small level of funding) and $150,000 (if entered into the Community Legacy category). Finalists that do not become Grand Prize Winners will receive a $5,000 donation to a charity of their choice.

Finalists are to be announced on November 1st.

Vehicles Entered

During the 24 hour period from Thursday morning at 7am until 7am Friday morning the Brockville Police Service took 5 reports of vehicles entered throughout the city. Most of the occurrences consisted of minor thefts of small amounts of money and loose change or ransacking of the vehicles.

Police again remind residents to avoid leaving valuables visible in your car, lock all doors and garages and to park in an area that is well lit and if possible heavily travelled so as to not tempt would be thieves.

Disturb the Peace

A 52 year old Brockville man was arrested early this morning after a Crawford Street resident called saying the man was extremely intoxicated and out of control.

At 1:20 a.m. Brockville Police received a call to Crawford Street about a disturbance. When officers arrived they found the man to be very intoxicated and still being loud and not calming down. As a result officers arrested the man and conveyed to the police station where spent the night.

During the arrest officers located a small amount of marijuana on the man. In the morning he was released from custody when sober, and his drugs seized for destruction.

Fraud Suspects sought

The Brockville Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating and identifying two male suspects for a fraud incident which occurred last week at Shopper’s Drug Mart on Parkedale Avenue.

Yesterday just after 12 p.m. officers were called to the 1000 Islands Mall Shopper’s Drug Mart where staff reported two males were in the store and bought two bundles of stamps (approximately 2000 stamps) worth just over $1900 using a credit card. The card was later reported to the store to be fraudulent. Staff also reported the same two suspects were inside the store again on Tuesday, but fled before police could be alerted. They were last seen leaving in a grey vehicle.

The suspects are described as black males, in there early 30’s, medium build. One is clean shaven and wearing glasses and the other with a beard.

Shoplifters Arrested

A 27 year old man and 31 year old girlfriend were arrested yesterday after they were observed by alert Loss Prevention Officers at Wal-Mart yesterday afternoon stealing a large quantity of video games.

The pair was observed in the electronics section of the store selecting a large quantity of games from the store and leaving without paying for the merchandise and before they could be apprehended. They returned to the store a short time later in an attempt to take more games and were recognized by loss prevention staff that apprehended the pair until police arrived.

Further investigation revealed they had taken the games to a local pawn shop where the games were pawned for cash in between visits to Wal-Mart.

At the time of the arrest, both were also at large on a Recognizance of Bail for previous charges and as a result were held in custody pending a bail hearing later today.

Members of police services throughout Ontario including members of the Brockville Police were able to ensure the safety of 6 people who had been working in the sex trade and were in exploitive situations, including 2 under the age of 16. Additionally, 12 people were charged with 21 offences as part of Operation Northern Spotlight, a coordinated, national effort to end human trafficking.

During Operation Northern Spotlight, police meet with individuals suspected of being in exploitive situations. They are provided contacts and information for community-based support agencies and are offered both immediate and future police assistance to leave the exploitation. The program is not intended to engage those who are not being exploited.

Over a seven-day period, 46 police services across Ontario were involved and 12 people were charged with 21 offences. A total of 331 police officers, support staff and victim services engaged 198 people, as part of a joint effort coordinated by the Ontario Provincial Police. It was part of an international operation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), RCMP and involved police services from Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia and the United Kingdom.

Charges include: Advertise Another Person’s Sexual Services, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Receive Material Benefit from Sexual Services, Keeping a Common Bawdy House, Procuring Material Benefit, Trafficking in Persons, Prohibited Weapon, Procuring a Person Under 18 Years of Age and Receive a Material Benefit Under 18 Years of Age.

Stolen Vehicle Recovered

Yesterday morning Brockville Police received a call from a King Street resident reporting that sometime overnight Monday her 2014 Green Mitsubishi Mirage had been taken from the rear parking lot of her building.

She was only without her vehicle for a short time however as officers with the Leeds OPP detachment located the stolen vehicle at the Super 8 Motel just east of the city early yesterday afternoon and had one man in custody for the vehicle theft.

The vehicle has since been returned to the owner.

Brockville woman turns herself in on warrant

A 60 year old Brockville woman attended to the Brockville Police Service and surrendered to police after learning she had an outstanding warrant for failing to attend for her fingerprints on October 12th.

The woman was originally charged by Brockville Police on September 20th for impaired driving and driving with over the legal limit of alcohol in her blood after an afternoon traffic stop on Parkedale Avenue near the police station.

She is now facing additional charges of Failing to Attend for Identifications and was released with a future court date.

Stolen Vehicles Recovered and Man in Custody

A 22 year old Ottawa man, who frequents the Brockville area, is in custody this morning pending a bail hearing later today after being arrested early this morning in connection with a pair of stolen vehicle investigations over the past several days.

On Saturday morning at approximately 9:30 Brockville Police received a call from a Balmoral Place resident telling officers his blue 2005 Dodge Caravan had been stolen sometime overnight from the parking lot. The subsequent police investigation led police to believe the 22 year old man was responsible for the theft and advised area police.

Last evening, Brockville Police received information from the Ottawa Police Service they had recovered the Blue Caravan stolen Saturday in Brockville and arrangements were made to recover the vehicle.

At 10:50 p.m. last evening Brockville Police communications centre received information from OPP Communications that their officers attempted to stop a white Ford Fusion entering Brockville for a Highway Traffic infraction but were unsuccessful. They had later learned the vehicle was reported stolen out of Ottawa and may be in the city.

The 22 year old suspect was later located inside Tim Horton’s on William Street by officers’ shortly after midnight and taken into custody on a variety of offences in relation to the two stolen vehicles and for breach the conditions of his Recognizance for being out past his curfew. The stolen Ford Fusion was later located in the Sheridan Mews area of downtown and recovered.

Both the Ottawa and Brockville Police Services are continuing their investigations.

Arrest Warrants Executed

A pair of Brockville area men is in custody this morning awaiting a bail hearing later today after arrest warrants were executed yesterday.

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad located a 41 year old Brockville man in Smiths Falls yesterday who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend for his intermittent sentence at the Brockville Jail Friday October 13th. Officers from the Brockville Police Service returned the man to Brockville and he is appearing in Brockville Court later today for a Bail Hearing.

A 55 year old Cardinal man was arrested by Prescott OPP yesterday evening for an outstanding warrant after Failing to Appear in Brockville Court on June 10th, 2016 on Breach of Probation charges. The man was charged by Prescott OPP in September 2015 and released on a Promise to Appear at the time. He failed to appear at a subsequent court appearance in June of 2016 and the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest. He will appear as well in Brockville Court today for a Bail Hearing.
