Forensic Identification Unit

The Forensic Identification Unit consists of two Detective Constables who have attended the Ontario Police College for comprehensive forensic training courses. The Forensic Identification Unit is a part of the Criminal Investigations Branch which provides 24/7 coverage to support general patrol operations and all specialty units within the Brockville Police Service.

The Forensic Identification Unit provides crime scene processing which includes identifying, preserving, seizing, and documenting evidence. Forensic Identification Officers maintain case files over lengthy time periods and prepare evidence for presentation before the Courts.

Forensic Identification Officers undergo complex and demanding education/training to develop the skills required to support and assist in criminal investigations. Forensic Identification Officers participate in ongoing training courses in multiple specialized disciplines.

What does a Forensic Identification officer do?

  • Document, Preserve, Collect, and Process Evidence
  • Coordinate submissions of evidence for Forensic Analysis at the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences
  • Work alongside the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Pathology Units
  • Identify unknown deceased persons
  • Collect and manage DNA databank samples
  • Maintain and Support the Scenes of Crime Officer program
  • Friction Ridge Analysis (Fingerprint Identification)
  • Bloodstain Pattern Recognition and Documentation
  • Firearm Examination and Shooting Scene Documentation
  • Footwear and Tire Impression Evidence
  • Crime Scene Mapping
  • Support Investigative Units and General Patrol
