Scammers active in area

Brockville residents seem to be the target of fraudsters in the area again.

On Thursday evening Brockville Police received a call from a Brockville area woman who went to check on her elderly father who resides in the city. When she arrived at her father’s residence she observed her father had a large amount of gift cards sitting on his kitchen table. After speaking with her dad, she learned that he had been the victim of a scam whereby her father was encouraged to purchase gift cards to pay a bill.

Common versions of this scam operating in the area will be to coerce the victim into paying for a loved one’s medical bill who has been in an accident, or a tax bill of some sort such as duty to get a package into the country.

Residents are asked to watch out for family and friends who make abnormally large purchases of gift cards especially for items and from stores they do not normally purchases items from.
